How to avoid ripping your garment when making button holes

Have you ever finished a garment and the only remaining thing is to do the button holes, open them and then… you rip the whole garment… well, it has happened to me, and I can confess that it is super annoying, frustrating, enraging…
Here I am going to show you how to avoid that huge little mistake (if only I had new this sewing tip before…).

Once you have done your button hole (if you don’t know how to do it just say so and I’ll do a tutorial about it 😉 ) place a pin below the top stitches of your button hole, as shown in the picture below.

With the help of your seam ripper, make a hole underneath that pin (inside the button hole).

The pin placed will stop the ripper going forward so you avoid ripping the whole garment.

Make the hole big enough for your scissors to enter it.

With the tip of your scissors, open completely (always inside the stitches) your button hole, on both parts (up and down).

And your button hole is done and your garment is not ripped of! 😉

  1. I use a button hole cutter, it’s like a small chisel and makes a smooth even easy cut with no rip issues.
